Barberton City Schools Continue to be Recognized for Superior Energy EfficiencyPosted on 6/22/2015 All four Barberton City School District schools are now ENERGY STAR certified. May 27, 2015, Barberton, Ohio - All of the education buildings in the Barberton City School District have earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification, signifying that the buildings perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. Barberton’s two new elementary schools, Barberton Elementary West with a rating of 89 and Barberton Elementary East with a rating of 90, join Barberton High School and Barberton Middle School as ENERGY STAR labeled buildings. The middle school opened in 2011 and earned the EPA’s label in 2013 with a rating of 96. Constructed in 2000, the high school earned the label in 2012 following a retrofit project completed as part of the facilities improvement plan. Barberton City Schools selected CCG Automation, Inc. (CCG) in 2010 to provide a building automation system (BAS) that would be consistent throughout all of the new buildings being constructed in the district. The facilities plan also included upgrades at Barberton High School. The BAS system in the ten-year-old high school was not performing efficiently so the district approved replacing the system with the Automated Logic WebCTRL® system that was being installed in the new middle school and elementary schools. As a result, the energy usage in the high school was reduced by more than 25 percent in the first year after the upgrades were completed, earning the ENERGY STAR rating of 76. Brian Wagner, president of CCG Automation, presented the Barberton Board of Education with the official certifications during the monthly board meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2015. According to Superintendent Patricia Cleary, “The ENERGY STAR labels are a great accomplishment for the district and proof that the administration and staff are focused on providing quality facilities for the students of Barberton. We appreciate CCG for partnering with us to achieve this prestigious status.” “Of the more than 3,150 educational buildings in Ohio, only 9 percent have attained the impressive ENERGY STAR certification. This is a huge honor for Barberton City School District with all four of their buildings now certified,” commented Wagner. Buildings that earn the EPA ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The EPA ENERGY STAR energy performance scale helps organizations assess how efficiently their buildings use energy relative to similar buildings nationwide. A building that scores a 75 or higher on the EPA 1-100 scale may be eligible for ENERGY STAR certification.
