Design - Controls Engineer

Are you looking for a unique role where you can combine your field experience with an engineering role? As a Controls Engineer you will be responsible for the design of building automation systems using company tools and operating standards to produce the most cost effective, energy efficient solutions for our customers.  

Roles and Responsibilities
As a Controls Engineer with CCG Automation you will be part of a team that is responsible for the sequence of operation, design and completion of drawings for each project.  You will work closely with the installation and performance assurance departments to design and create these building automation systems.   

  • Responsible for the successful overall hardware and software design of CCG projects, as well the implementation of the Engineering department procedures and standards used in the installation, commissioning, and documentation of controls projects.
    • Assist with project estimating.
    • Research existing or specified HVAC mechanical systems to determine the best integration of controls.
    • Analyze existing client’s mechanical and electrical HVAC systems to determine best solution for customer.
    • Work closely with architects and engineers during the design stage.

  • Responsible for Sequence of Operations
    • Fully read and understand project scope of work, contract documents, and project specific sequence of operations.
    • Continuously fine-tune standard sequences of operation to ensure systems are operating most energy efficiently while providing a comfortable environment.
  • Complete assigned projects on or before the scheduled submittal date by coordinating with and facilitating the various internal personnel and external organizations.
    • Includes control valve submittals, damper submittals, airflow station submittals, water flow meter submittals, as well as equipment coordination.
    • Responsible for assembling and distributing project submittals
  • Responsible for engineering of drawings both in the office and field.
    • Create control drawings for retrofit and construction projects.
    • Perform on-site research of existing conditions/equipment for project design as needed.
    • Generate rough-in coordination drawings for use by electrical contractors.
    • Complete as-built documentation for each project assigned.
  • Ensure all drawings, materials, check out books and documentation required to complete a project are on hand at the proper location to ensure the scheduled timeline and budget requirements are met.
  • Assist field technicians with point verification, system checkout and validation when required.
  • Project Communications
    • Attend job meetings prior to installation.
    • Submit RFI’s to engineers and architects. 
    • Prepare, maintain and track engineering project correspondence.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment
This job operates in an office environment and a field setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. When in the field you may need to use industry, specific tools including thermal scanners, air-balancing tools, meters, etc.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to occasionally use small hand and power tools. Must be able to climb ladders.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position regularly requires overtime.

Education and Experience

  • Competent working with Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Associate degree in Engineering or Applied Sciences or equivalent experience.
  • Integration experience: Tridium Certification is a bonus.
  • Excellent organizational and oral/written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of HVAC/mechanical systems.
  • Experience designing building control and monitoring systems, including ancillary systems and products such as valves and dampers.
  • Ability to write, edit and understand sequences of operations.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring and schematics.
  • Some knowledge of third-party integration concepts with experience in BACnet and Modbus preferred.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Ability to pass drug screening.
  • Ability to pass formal background check, both BCI (Ohio) and FBI.
  • Ability to prove U.S. Employment eligibility.
  • Will be required to complete a personality profile.
