Rittman Exempted Village Schools' Rittman Elementary Awarded with EPA's ENERGY STARPosted on 1/11/2010 (Rittman, Ohio) January 2010 - Rittman Elementary, part of the Rittman Exempted Village Schools, has earned the honor of becoming an ENERGY STAR labeled building from the Environmental Protection Agency. Only forty-seven K-12 buildings in Ohio have received the distinction. Rittman Elementary was built in 2006. As part of the new construction, Rittman Exempted Village Schools contracted with CCG Automation, Inc. for the installation of the building automation system. Automated Logic's WebCTRL was installed to control all major pieces of HVAC equipment and exterior lighting as well as monitoring CO2 levels. This web based system has the ability to do scheduling, zoning, defining setpoints, and analyzing trends in energy consumption. CCG's innovative approach to energy conservation has played an instrumental part in this school becoming ENERGY STAR labeled. Along with low energy use for Rittman Elementary, they are also providing a positive environmental impact to the community with a significant amount of pollutants not being emitted into the atmosphere. This is achieved while continuing to provide a comfortable environment for students and staff. School buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR Award use nearly 40 percent less energy than average buildings and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, offering a significantly smaller carbon footprint. Buildings excel due to good energy management practices such as routine energy efficiency benchmarking. ENERGY STAR was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. To qualify for the ENERGY STAR, a building must score in the top 25 percent based on EPA's National Energy Performance Rating System. Only 8,784 buildings nationwide have earned the ENERGY STAR Award, and just 2,328 of these are school buildings. Other buildings include supermarkets, offices, churches, hotels, banks, hospitals, courthouses, warehouses, dormitories and big-box retail buildings. |
