Mapleton Elementary, Mapleton Local Schools

New Building; Same Old Control Issues

Mapleton Elementary School looked beautiful, but not to administrators who saw the high utility bills it generated. Staff and students weren't thrilled either - room temperatures varied up to 8 degrees from setpoint, which made rooms uncomfortably warm or cold.

CCG Automation installed a new temperature control system that improved comfort and dramatically reduced utility costs. Temperature is controlled to within one-tenth of one degree of setpoint.

Lesson learned:

There are options available so you don't have to settle for poor quality from a low bid.

Success Points:

  • Reduced energy costs to $1.03 per square foot

  • Energy consumption reduced to 39,399 BTUs per square foot

  • Projected annual energy savings of $41,711

  • Actual annual energy savings of $125,021

  • Savings exceeded projection by $83,310

  • Building is ENERGY STAR Certified with a rating of 81

Mapleton Local Schools was able to recover its investment in the upgrade in 15 months, thanks to the energy savings it generated. Over the life of the building, Mapleton Local Schools will save more than $26 million in utility costs*.

*Allowing for a 5 percent utility inflation.
